The LUISA architecture relies on SWS languages and techniques as the main building block to make richer and more flexible the processes of query and specification of learning needs, which may come directly from learners, or demanded by tutors or authors (or even by the system itself) as part of the process of authoring or instructional design. Ontologies are critical to this process, since the exploitation of ontology relations enables automated branching of the needs (e.g. breaking down a requirement) and the retrieval of similar or equivalent requirements.
